A collapsar is the shortened form for a collapsed star. When an old star exhausts its nuclear fuel, one of three fates awaits it — determined entirely by its mass. Below 1.4 solar masses (the Chandrasekhar limit) it stabilises as a white dwarf. Beyond that threshold it collapses into a neutron star, or falls past its own event horizon to become a black hole.
